Lexus exhibits prototype fuel-cell car

Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled the first fuel-cell vehicle prototype under its Lexus premium brand Oct. 28 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center.

Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled the first fuel-cell vehicle prototype under its Lexus premium brand Oct. 28 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center. The company hopes the car, together with the Toyota Mirai, the world’s first commercial fuel-cell vehicle, will enhance the image of the zero-emission vehicles.

The prototype, billed the LF-FC, made an appearance at a media preview for the Tokyo Motor Show at the convention center in Tokyo’s Koto Ward, two days before the event opens to the public. The LF-FC is expected to become the basis for the next-generation model of the LS, Lexus’s top-end large sedan with a four-liter engine.

The lineup of the next-generation LS will focus on gasoline and gas-electric hybrid models, but is also expected to include an environmentally friendly fuel-cell model. The fourth-generation LS is currently on the market. The luxury sedan, long sold as the Toyota Celsior in Japan, has not been fully redesigned since 2006.

The Tokyo Motor Show will run through Nov. 8.
